It is well known now that throughout the world, men and women have different medical issues. When you think of cancer in women, for example, you automatically think of breast cancer. It may not be as common as in women but breast cancer is found in men as well.

Looking cancer in men it invariably brings up prostrate cancer. Today’s man at a party is more likely to discuss this topic that that of his recently purchased sports car.

If we are honest, it’s the cure we are interested in and preferably how to prevent it but this requires a good deal of research.

If the truth be known, cancer does worry me. I don’t doubt that like me, most men haven’t got it on their minds all day long. However, it does enter my mind every time I see something addressing the illness. When you watch the television, you can’t escape from it with a number of adverts relating to prostrate and breast cancer every hour.

Both will require far more investigation and examination before a cure can be found. As health problems go, cancer is probably the most pervasive in the world and a cure to this dreadful disease cannot come too soon.

I say this specifically about cancer because it’s one illness that cannot be fully prevented. Ok, so you can do all the right things, have the correct diet and exercise, don’t smoke etc. but that doesn’t mean you won’t get it.

No matter how bad HIV is, it is avoidable and is something that is passed from one individual to another, cancer is completely different.

Reading articles and reports carried out on prostrate cancer research is informative and let’s you exactly how far we are away from finding a cure. New treatments and breakthroughs are in the public domain so you do not have to be ignorant on any subject.

One day, articles like this will be redundant because all that breast and prostrate cancer research will have found a cure.

We all know that prostate cancer can happen to any male and it is a very common type of cancer. The commonest form of cancer in the United States today is skin cancer but, to many people’s surprise, prostate cancer is the second most frequently seen type of cancer and results in some 30,000 deaths each year. According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, this type of cancer is the most prevalent non-skin cancer in the United States.

A prostate seed implant may be the only type of radiation therapy needed by a man with low-risk prostate cancer or it may be prescribed in addition to external beam radiation therapy in men with intermediate- and high- risk prostate cancer. If caught in its early stages prostate cancer can be successfully treated either by surgery or radiation therapy (radiotherapy) and, while such treatment can often leave its mark in terms of ongoing problems with urination or a degradation or loss of sexual function, the cancer will often not return. Curing prostate cancer is possible, and the treatment is more effective if cancer is detected in the early stages.

Curing prostate cancer is possible, but the condition has to be detected in the early stages. Because prostate cancer is a relatively slow-growing disease and easy to control if it is detected early enough, the regular screenings are recommended for obese people experiencing the above symptoms. Although the aforementioned prostate statistics don’t seem to be good, the truth of the matter is that if prostate cancer is detected early, treatments are often very successful and chances of surviving are very high.

Although the same researchers were quick to point out that each year fewer and fewer men are dying of prostate cancer, due to awareness, better treatments and early detection through new and more available screening techniques. In order to catch prostate cancer in its early stages, it is recommended that men with no risk factors get an annual screening every year beginning at age 50. In addition, beginning at age 50, an annual PSA test is necessary because it is substantially more sensitive for men health than DRE when it comes to detecting early, tiny, or even microscopic cancers that are confined to the prostate gland.

In addition, another confusing aspect is that most of the possible warning signs, if they appear, are also the same signs for other prostate health problems that are non-cancerous in nature, such as BPH, which is called an enlarged prostate gland. I’m sure that we’ve all heard at some point or another the notion that more sex is the solution to prostate problems, citing as evidence the high incidence of prostate cancer in celibate priests. This could be the first time an evidence is produced that a virus is related to prostate cancer development.

Probably, the conclusion that drugs lowering cholesterol may help prevent prostate cancer or at least decrease its development is premature. Sun exposure prevent prostate cancer and the new research suggest vitamin D in supplement may be a safer option today for men. Researchers shown that vitamin D has many micronutrients promote and prevent the prostate cancer in men.

Chemotherapy is typically not effective against prostate cancer although newer drugs developed in recent years have shown the ability to relieve symptoms in men with advanced prostate cancer. According to Prostate Cancer Foundation, symptoms of the ailment include a necessity to urinate very often, weak urine flow, difficulty in starting urination, painful or burning urination, painful ejaculation, blood cells in the semen or urine, as well as frequent pain and cramps in the lower back, hips and upper thighs. One of the most common symptoms listed above is the difficulty starting to pass urine, but keep your eye out for the others.

I spend time being concerned about all sorts of things. My finances are always a worry and my job prospects concern me but the most important thing is my health. We may disregard our health when we are young but as we get older we become more aware of our bodies and the problems thay can suffer. For men of a certain age, the prostate is, or should be, a concern.

Prostate cancer is not a typical topic of conversation for men. Most men know nothing about the prostate and unlike women who are usually aware of breast cancer men seem to want to continue in blissful ignorance of the possible problems with the prostate even though early diagnosis and treatment can often lead to a successful conclusion.

For some reason men do not seem to discus medical matters in the same way that women do. Why that is, is difficult to understand since discussion of just this one subject of the prostate gland would no doubt save lives by making men more aware of potential prostate health problems.

They say that ignorance is no defence and that certainly applies to prostate health problems. Ignoring it will not make it all go away and being ignorant of possible symptoms leaves you open to the chances of far greater health problems later. Learning about your prostate and possible symptoms of prostate related health issues can help you together with your doctor in overcoming those difficulties.

For most men the prostate presents no problems before they are in their fifties. Once they reach that age the most common problem to occur seems to be growth of the prostate gland which can put pressure on the other parts of the body which it is adjacent to. Growth of the prostate is quite common in older men and does not always present a problem.

There is a one in six chance of a man developing prostate cancer in his lifetime in the US. Treatment is usually effective and the success rate following early diagnosis is very high. This clearly shows that early diagnosis is very important and men should be aware of the risks.

Since early diagnosis can make such an important difference to the effectiveness of treatment you should consult with your doctor and ask about regular examinations and checks. Early treatment is said to be around 99% effective so it is clear that regular checkups can make an important difference.

Introduction:-

by Kim and Charles Petty

Introduction:-

Prostate is a glandular organ present only in males. It surrounds the neck of bladder & the first part of urethra and condributes a secretion to the semen. The gland is conical in shape and measures 3 cm in vertical diameter and 4 cm in transverse diameter. It has got five lobes anterior, posterior, two lateral and a median lobe.Since the first part of the urethra pass through it any lesion in the prostate will produce difficulty in passing urine.

Diseases of the prostate gland:-

1) Prostatitis:-

This is the inflamation of the prostate gland due to bacterial infection.

2) Benign enlargement of the prostate:-

This is a non cancerous tumour of the prostate seen after the age of 50. 3,Cancer of the prostate:-This is the 4th most common cause of death from malignant diseases in males.

Cancer of the prostate.

Cancer of the prostate is directly linked with the male sex hormones(androgens). If the levels of sex hormone increases the growth rate of cancer also increases. It is found that after the removel of testes there is marked reduction in the size of tumour.

Site of tumour:-

Prostate cancer is seen mainly in the posterior lobe.Non cancerous enlargement is seen in other lobes.

Changes in the gland in cancer:-

The gland becomes hard with irregular surface with loss of normal lobulation .Histologically prostate cancer is an adeno carcinoma(cancer of the epithelial cells in the gland)

Growth :-

Growth rate is very fast in prostate cancer .The tumour compresses the urethra and produce difficulty in urination.

Spread of tumour:-

Metastasis in cancer of prostate is very early.

1) Local spread:-

From the posterior lobe the cancer cells go to the lateral lobes and seminal vesicles.Tumour cells also move to the neck and base of the urinary bladder.

2) Lymphatic spread:-

Through the lymph vessels cancer cells reach the internal and external illiac group of lymph nodes. From there cells move to retroperitonial(Behind the peritonium) and mediastinal lymph nodes(in the chest)

3) Spread through the blood:-

Spread of cancer cells takeplace through the periprostatic venous plexus and reaches the vertebral veins while coughing and sneezing and finally enders the vertebral bodies of the lumbar vertebrae.

Signs and symptoms of prostate cancer:–

Signs and symptoms depend upon the stage of the cancer. The following symptoms may be seen.

1) No symptoms:-

Tumour is small and only in the posterior lobe. This is diagnosed accidentely.

2) Slight difficulty in urination:-

Here the tumour is enlarged and urethra is slightly compressed.Shortly there will be frequent urge for urination with difficult urination.

3) When the tumour spread to all nearby areas including neck of bladder and urethra there will be painful urination with bleeding.Urine comes drop by drop.

4) Retention of urine:-

When the urethra is completely compressed there will be retention of urine. This can lead to hydronephrosis, renal failure ect.In this condition patient may get convulsions due to renal failure and finally coma.

5) Signs of metastasis:-

Some patients come with the signs and symptoms of metastasis.

a) Lumbo sacral pain due to spread of cancer cells to lumbar and sacral vertebrae.

b) Fracture of spine due to cancerous growth in the spine.

c) Swelling, pain and fluid collection in the abdomen due to lesion in the abdomen.

d) Respiratory complaints due to cancer of mediastinal lymphnodes and lungs.

e) General weakness due to spread of cancer to different parts of the body.

f) Anaemia due to involment of bone marrow and increased destruction of RBCs.

Clinical examination :-

Includes per rectal examination to feel the prostate gland, palpation of abdomen to feel the swelling in kidneys and any tumours.Patient is examined from head to foot to find out any lesions.

Investigations:-

1) Complete blood investigations;-

RBC,WBC,Platlets,ESR,bleeding time ,clotting time ect.

2) Urine analysis:-

Microscopic examination to detect pus cells, occult blood, casts,Crystals ect.

3) Renal function tests:-

Blood urea level, serum creatinine level, electrolyte level ect.

4) Serum acid phosphatase:-

Increased in cancer of prostate.

5) x-ray of the spine:-

To detect any tumour or fracture.

6) Ultra sonography;-

Gives idea about prostate,bladder,kidney ect.

7) C T scan:-

More detailed information about organs and tumour.

 MRI of the spine:-

Gives detailed information about spine ,disc and nearby soft tissues.

9) Lymphangiography:-

Gives idea about lymphatic spread of cancer.

10) Biopsy to confirm cancer:-

Biopsy is taken from the tumour and is send for histopathological examination under the microscope. This will detect the presence of cancer cells.

Treatment:-

1) If there is retention of urine catheterisation is needed. 2) Dialysis if kidney failure. 3) If there is coma monitoring of all vital functions along with parentral nutrition and electolyte supply. 4) Specific treatment is prostatectomy(removal of prostate)

Partial prostatectomy :-

Here only the affected lobe is removed.

Radical prostatectomy :-

Total removal of prostate along with nearby lymphnodes.

5, Hormone therapy :-

Stilbestrol is given to reduce tumour growth.Since this treatement increases the chance for cardiovascular disease phosphorylated diethyle stilbesterol is used nowadays.

6) Chemotherapy:-Drugs like cyclophosphamide, cisoplatim ect are given.

7) Radiotherapy is also done for some cases.

 Homoeopathy:-

Homoeopathic drugs like carcinocin, conium, sabal, crotalus, thuja, iodum, selinium, staphysagria, sulphur ect can be given according to symptoms.Constitutional homoeopathic medicine will give great relief and can increase the life span.

9) Yoga and meditation is also healpful.

The latest on T3 prostate cancer is that patients who have to go through radical prostate surgery can still get good outcomes for the long term. Published in the Journal of Urology (August 2006), the report came from research at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and tackled the latest on T3 prostate cancer by testing 176 male subjects.

The Latest on T3 Prostate Cancer - Surgery vs. Hormones

The patients had regional or locally advance T3 prostate cancer and so were undergoing radiotherapy combined with androgen deprivation. They had also had radical prostrate surgery, from 1983?2003.

Out of all the patients, 64 were given Neoadjuvant hormonal treatment, while the rest had radical prostate surgery as their only therapy.

The Latest on T3 Prostate Cancer - PSA Tests

The patients who got the hormonal treatment had higher PSA levels before treatment. They also had more cases of semen invasion.

Men with high levels of prostate-specific antigen or PSA have been shown to develop prostate cancer. But the test is not 100% accurate.

PSA is currently being tested in the hopes of providing some sort of early warning device for prostate cancer diagnosis in its first stage.

The Latest on T3 Prostate Cancer - Short Term Results

The latest on T3 prostate cancer reveals that tumors were downgraded and confined to the organ in 24% of patients who only had prostate surgery as therapy. For patients who had hormonal treatment, downgrading was much better at 41%.

Other results of the study were:

1. A positive surgical margin was noted in 24% of the prostate surgery only patients, and 31% of the hormonal treatment group.

2. Biochemical reactions were seen in 48% of the patients over four and a half years after prostate surgery.

3. The likelihood of being free of any biochemical reactions for 10 years steadily declined as patients had higher PSA levels.

4. It didn?t necessarily follow that only those who underwent hormonal treatment also had biochemical reactions.

The Latest on T3 Prostate Cancer - Long Term Results

The latest on T3 prostate cancer report also stated the following results, which doctors noted over the long term.

1. The overall likelihood that the patients wouldn?t suffer from clinical failure at 5 years was 86%. At 10 years, the probability dropped by 10%.

2. 6.4 years later, 82% of the patients were found to be alive, 11% had died of T3 prostate cancer, and 7% due to other causes.

3. The disease didn?t recur in 52% of patients who underwent prostate surgery for T3 prostate cancer.

Metastasis transforms cancer of the prostate to bone marrow cancer. When prostate cancer metastasizes, the cancer leaves the prostate gland and adjacent organs. Metastasis from prostate to bone marrow cancer usually occurs in advance stage prostate cancer.

During metastasis, cancer cells spread outward. They may spread nearby or they may migrate to distant organs.

Prostate to Bone Marrow Cancer ? Does It Follow A Pattern?

So far, clinical research hasn?t pinpointed any exact way cancer cells spread. However, scientific research has documented distinct patterns in the way certain types of cancer spread.

Also, that certain cancer cell types have a ?preference? for settling in some parts of the body more than others.

So what?s the likelihood of prostate to bone marrow cancer metastasis? Although the reasons behind the pattern are unclear, studies have shown that prostate cancer cells have a preference for settling in bone tissue.

What?s more, prostate cancer cells have a tendency to settle in bone tissue after spreading to the area of the pelvis.

When prostate cancer cells settle into the bone, it becomes known as prostate cancer bone metastasis.

Prostate to Bone Marrow Cancer ? Are Both Treated in the Same Way?

Not necessarily. In primary bone cancer, the cancer cells originate within the bone. In secondary bone cancer, such as prostate cancer bone metastasis, the cancer cells that sit in the bone remain prostate cancer cells. They just happen to sit in the bone.

So in prostate to bone marrow cancer metastasis, cancer cells receive the same exact treatment as those in prostate cancer, like chemo or hormone therapy.

However, prostate cancer cells that have metastasized to the bone won?t just sit there doing nothing. Interacting with the bone tissue, they interfere with bone function and growth, making it weak.

So doctors will treat these prostate cancer cells accordingly, but will also use therapy directed at keeping the bone as strong and healthy as possible.

Prostate to Bone Marrow Cancer ? Probabilities

Primary bone cancer cases are comparatively rare. Usually, ?bone cancer? patients are those that developed it from advance stages of prostate cancer. So since doctors refer to a cancer by where the disease originated, such patients are said to (still) have prostate cancer, but with bone metastasis.

Any type of cancer can metastasize to bone, but the most common bone metastases come from:
- Breast cancer
- Lung cancer
- Prostate cancer

Prostate to Bone Marrow Cancer ? Symptoms

In its advance stage, prostate cancer with bone metastasis will have the following symptoms:
- Soreness/stiffness of the hips, thighs, and lower back
- Severe pain (degrees vary across patients)
- Abnormally high calcium levels in blood (Hypercalcemia)

Prostate overdiagnosis is basically detection of prostate cancer using prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing that would otherwise not have been spotted within patients’ lifetimes. Since prostate cancer incidence in the US is high, its detection and overall treatment are of extreme importance. Prostate overdiagnosis is used for detecting cancers that wouldn’t have become apparent during the normal course of an individual’s existence.

About Prostate Overdiagnosis

Prostate cancer screening is closely related to prostate overdiagnosis. It’s an attempt to try and find unsuspected cancers in the body. General screening tests may give rise to more specific follow-up exams like biopsies, wherein small portions of the prostate are taken for further study.

Currently, prostate overdiagnosis and cancer screening options include digital rectal exams and PSA blood tests. However, it’s not clear whether the benefits of prostate cancer screening and prostate overdiagnosis outweigh the known risks of doing follow-up diagnostic testing and treatments, which makes it all the more controversial.

Prostate cancer is a fairly slow-growing type of cancer. It’s extremely common among elderly men. In fact, majority of prostate cancers never grow enough to the point of exhibiting symptoms. Most guys with prostate cancer die of other diseases or causes, way before prostate cancer has a dramatic impact on their lives.

The PSA screening test as it relates to prostate overdiagnosis, is useful for detecting these small cancers that would possibly never reach life-threatening proportions. Running the PSA test in such men could lead to prostate overdiagnosis, plus additional tests and treatments. Follow-up tests like prostate biopsy, might cause pain, infection and bleeding. Prostate cancer treatments may result in erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence.

Prostate overdiagnosis is helpful in revealing the existence of related cancers in men. Screening for prostate cancer usually starts after the age of 50, but it could also be offered sooner in black men or those with a strong history of prostate cancer in their family. Although there’s no officially proposed cutoff, most healthcare providers cease PSA monitoring and other prostate overdiagnosis tests in men once they reach 75 years and up.

Assuming that PSA screenings are effective, prostate overdiagnosis is considered by many to be quite acceptable ? well, save for the fact that a lot of men diagnosed with prostate cancer via PSA testing would have to endure unnecessary biopsies and significant risks of side effects from cancer treatment, even if they’d benefit nothing from the treatment.

Prostate cancer symptoms of fever may occur due to five major reasons: infection, tumors, blood transfusion, GVHD (graft vs. host disease), or drugs. Prostate cancer symptoms of fever are also sometimes observed as chills, sweats, or hot flashes.

Data on treating hot flashes in prostate cancer patients are scarce. What studies there are indicate that changing sex hormone levels is the culprit. But pilot studies show that drugs exist to deal with the problem.

Aside from prostate cancer symptoms of fever, other types of cancers that share this symptom are leukemia, bone cancer, and Non-Hodgkin?s lymphoma.

Prostate Cancer Symptoms of Fever from Infection

Fever due to infection is called Neutropenic Fever. Prostate cancer symptoms of fever due to infection occur in 75% of patients ? and the outcome is potentially fatal.

The main causes are the bacteria coagulase staphylococci and streptococci, as well as gram-positive bacteria. So what triggers it? Studies show the following causes.
- Use of intra-vascular devices
- Acute mucositis, which is in turn triggered by high dose chemotherapy
- Prophylactic antibiotic treatment using fluoroquinolones

Fluoroquinolones don?t really directly cause prostate cancer symptoms of fever. Rather, they cause bacteria to multiply, which in turn triggers Neutropenic Fever.

Prostate Cancer Symptoms of Fever from Tumors

Fever due to tumors is also called Paraneoplastic Fever. Many doctors consider it to be more typical of tumors like those in the renal glands or lymph nodes. But studies show that Paraneoplastic Fever can also occur due to tumors in other areas of the body, including the prostate gland.

Prostate cancer symptoms of fever come with hypersensitivity and tumor death, among other conditions.

Prostate Cancer Symptoms of Fever from Drugs

Prostate cancer symptoms of fever are also side effects of Zoledronic Acid. The prostate cancer drug, marketed under the brand name Zometa, also relieves bone pain.

It?s ironic, therefore, that the drug has been shown to cause skeletal pain. This skeletal discomfort is one of the flu-like symptoms, which are a side effect of this drug.

Aside from fever, Zoledronic Acid also causes gastrointestinal reactions, insomnia, anemia, and low calcium, potassium, and magnesium levels.

Treatments for Prostate Cancer Symptoms of Fever

Prostate cancer symptoms of fever lead to dehydration in the patient. There is also an increased demand on the patient?s metabolism, which leaves him feeling extremely tired.

To manage the fever, doctors will target the underlying cause. But they will also advice hydration therapy and nutritional support.

However, if the patient is near the end of his life he may no longer want treatment of the underlying cause.

Patients who show prostate cancer symptoms of fever during the advance stages of the disease, for instance, may refuse treatment for pneumonia. They will instead ask for palliative treatments and hydration to make the last days of their lives more comfortable.

A prostate supplement regimen is considered helpful in preserving prostate health. Although prostate disorders are variable, individualized and have multiple causes, there is a nutritional prostate supplement regimen men can adhere to in order to keep certain disorders and complications in check. It’s crucial that people choose wisely when selecting among numerous prostate supplement regimen alternatives.

Prostate Supplement Regimen Choices

When men hit 50, more than half of their population will likely face BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) ? the enlargement of the prostate gland that’s caused by DHT (a testosterone derivative) accumulation. This could be brought about by any number of factors ? from vitamin B6 deficiency to toxins to lack of zinc minerals to fatty acids depletion to pesticides and bacteria. Any of these things can play a part in the conversion of testosterone into DHT, causing the swelling of the gland.

A prostate supplement regimen can help in addressing these issues. The prostate supplement regimen a man selects will not only aid in BPH prevention but also help in easing the pain and retarding the progress of existing prostate problems. This is the main reason why more and more guys are looking to the natural prostate supplement regimen for relief. Such supplements give men a fighting chance against prostate disorders by decreasing their risk of developing prostate cancer.

Saw palmetto is a well-researched prostate supplement regimen product. Beta sitosterol, a powerful compound that interferes with DHT conversion to testosterone, is the active ingredient of this herb. It aids in prostate gland enlargement prevention. Saw palmetto also shrinks the prostate and provides relief from urinary problems.

Another popular prostate supplement regimen component is red clover. It comes from the pea family and is helpful in inhibiting DHT formation via its potent antioxidant quality. Lycopene is another nutrient causing a buzz in the prostate supplement regimen arena. It’s a powerful tomato extract that reduces inflammation and prevents prostate cancer onset.

Aside for prostate supplement regimen herbs, there are lots of minerals, vitamins and nutrients that can help men deal with prostate issues. As earlier mentioned, inadequate zinc levels can worsen the problem. Ensuring that the male body receives enough of this critical nutrient is important. Vitamin B6 is useful for regulating the hormone involved in testosterone-to-DHT transformation and keeps BPH at bay.

Before deciding on a prostate supplement regimen, do consult with a doctor and discuss what options are best for you. While there are many prostate supplement regimen choices available as separate or standalone products, a comprehensive prostate supplement regimen formula might be better. After all, it would contain all the minerals, herbal extracts, vitamins and other important ingredients crucial to maintaining prostate health.

It’s not hard to pinpoint the location of the male prostate. This sex gland in guys is found above the rectum and just underneath the bladder. The urethra is encircled by the prostate gland at the point where it joins the bladder. Due to the location of the male prostate, an enlarged prostate counts as one of the most frequent causes of pesky urinary symptoms.

Location of the male prostate gland prostate gland yields this piece of info ? it consists of two sections and is enclosed by an outer tissue layer. Its main function is to supply fluids to the semen so the sperm is sustained during ejaculation. Such fluids shield the semen against acids naturally occurring in the vagina.

Location of the Male Prostate ? Easy Does It

The location of the male prostate isn’t something that will take forever to get at. There’s no secret or highly technical procedure involved in determining the exact location of the male prostate. It’s about the same size as a walnut and encloses the neck of the bladder and urethra.

To make sure you’ve hit the exact location of the male prostate, look at a diagram. It’ll be easier to determine the location of the male prostate if you’ve got an illustration to help you out. Run a search on the major search engines. You’re bound to turn up a few illustrations concerning the location of the male prostate.

The prostate is partly glandular and partly muscular. It has ducts that open into the urethra’s prostatic portion. The prostate is composed of three lobes ? one center and two side lobes. Prostate glands secrete slightly alkaline fluids that form a portion of the seminal fluid which carries the sperm.

Location of the Male Prostate and More

There’s more to it than just mere location of the male prostate. The prostate undergoes two growth periods throughout the course of a man’s existence. The first one occurs during the early stages of puberty wherein its size doubles. Then its growth stops till around the age of 25. At this point, it slowly starts to grow again. For some men, this growth can be quite problematic once they hit their 50s.

It’s advisable for men over 50 to get regular prostate examinations and undergo a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test to rule out prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer. If you want to learn more about the prostate ? from the location of the male prostate to problems associated with it to treatment options, there are lots of places on the Internet that could provide more detailed information so do check them out.

The relationship between Hispanic men and prostate cancer began some years back when the disease was found to be the most common type of cancer among the race group. That the disease was later found to be the second leading reason for cancer death in the race further strengthened the association between Hispanic men and prostate cancer.

The latter was revealed in studies from 2001, which showed 7,000 Hispanics diagnosed with prostate cancer as well as 1,200 prostate cancer deaths.

The leading cause of cancer death is lung cancer among US men in general, as well as Hispanic men and prostate cancer is the most diagnosed of all types, aside from skin cancer. Prostate cancer is also more prevalent among African Americans than Caucasians, while occurring less in American Indians and Asians.

Hispanic Men and Prostate Cancer - What About Cure Rates?

In late 2004, associations between Hispanic men and prostate cancer came to the forefront of medical discussions. New York Presbyterian Hospital and Allen Pavilion reported the largest study of its kind in the Journal of Urology, which stated that:

1. Hispanics and Non-hispanic White Americans show practically the same success rates for prostate cancer therapy (i.e., 81% for Hispanics, 82% for Non-hispanics).

2. Hispanic Americans showed more advance cancer stages than Non-hispanic White Americans, which includes more abnormal rectal exams and severe tumors.

The period of the study was 1995?2002. The subjects were 136 Hispanic Americans (mostly of Dominican Republic origin) and 315 Non-hispanic White Americans.

The remarkably good news for Hispanics is that despite their showing more advance stages of cancer, their cure rates only differ by less than 1%.

Hispanic Men and Prostate Cancer - Why the Advance Symptoms?

Based on the 2004 study, the relationship between Hispanic men and prostate cancer, which causes them to show more advance cancer stages, is less about race and more about socio-economics.

According to the report, factors that compounded the association between Hispanic men and prostate cancer and led to point #2 above are:

* Access to healthcare
* Embarrassment
* Lack of awareness
* Attitudes towards health
* Different cultural perspective
* Distinct lifestyle practices
* Language barriers

One of the doctors behind the study said that better screening as well as early detection could significantly change this relationship between Hispanic men and prostate cancer.

New York Presbyterian Hospital doctors are continuing research into Hispanic men and prostate cancer associations, particularly the relationship between cancer and prostate size.

Cancer of the prostate and broccoli therapy was the buzz in US medical circles (and medical journals) from 2003 to 2004. Studies and opinions were being published all over the place proving cancer of the prostate and broccoli to be disease and cure.

One study published in a June 2003 issue of Journal of Biological Chemistry, reported that cruciferous veggies (i.e., broccoli, as well as cauliflower and kale) inhibit prostate cancer cell growth in humans. What?s more, they could even prevent cancer!

Cancer of the Prostate and Broccoli Treatment - How It Works

Cancer of the prostate and broccoli treatment is possible because the veggie contains phytochemicals that inhibit and prevent cancer in the prostate gland. Broccoli therapy has also proven effective in preventing cancers of the colon, breast, and endometrium.

Cruciferous veggies have a compound that is naturally converted by the human body into a potent male-hormone blocker. This is how prostate cancer cells are stopped from dividing and growing.

Cancer of the prostate and broccoli studies show that cancer cells treated with the compound showed 70% less growth than untreated cells.

Prostate and Broccoli Therapy With Tomatoes

The lycopene in tomatoes and tomato-based products, such as ketchup and tomato sauce, has long been proven to fight cancer.

But more new research is coming out that shows prostate and broccoli therapy is more effective if you eat lots of broccoli PLUS tomatoes. Studies show that this works so much better than just eating each veggie alone.

That?s why you?ll notice that lots of broccoli and lycopene extracts, sold as nutritional supplements, have flooded the market. Before you start buying these products, you should know that using them hasn?t been proven in clinical studies to have the same effect.

It?s also difficult to be certain what their manufacturers put in them. There?s no telling if any combination is harmful or beneficial as there is really no regulating body to deal with the accuracy manufacturer claims.

The FDA will only either require a disclaimer (e.g., no approved therapeutic claims) or say a product is safe for use without regulating effectiveness.

So the most practical thing for you to do (safety-wise AND price-wise) for your prostate and broccoli therapy is to buy fresh broccoli and tomatoes. Throw in some cauliflower and kale too!

Vary your recipes by using garlic, onions, or ginger, which by the way are powerful cancer fighting foods as well.

It?s also better if all your veggies are organically grown AND if you eat them raw.

Prostate infection and Colloidal Silver are associated in that Silver is known to destroy all sorts of viruses, even as it boosts the immune system. This seeming paradox is why prostate infection and colloidal silver therapy intrigues many scientists to this day.

Prostate Infection and Colloidal Silver ? What It Does?

Colloidal Silver provides support for the human body?s T-cells as they work against foreign organisms and toxins that have made their way into the bloodstream. It acts like a backup immune system, in case your real one isn?t adequate to fight environmental, stress, and disease-related toxins.

Since bacteria, such as staphylococcus and streptococcus, are known to cause prostate infection and Colloidal Silver has been proven to destroy bacteria, treatment becomes possible.

Aside from the bacteria mentioned above, clinical research reveals that Colloidal Silver can kill the following inside of 4 minutes.
- Viruses
- Fungi
- Pathogenic organisms

What?s more, scientists say that they haven?t yet encountered a microbe that Colloidal Silver can?t kill inside 5 minutes, even when the Silver is diluted as much as 5 parts/million.

Since it?s so powerful, you?d have to worry about side effects, right? Well, future studies can always reveal complications we haven?t yet discovered today. But, so far, trials show that Colloidal Silver doesn?t cause any serious complications, even when used in high concentration.

Prostate Infection and Colloidal Silver ? Cancer Fighter?

The reactions between prostate infection and Colloidal Silver have led scientists to test Silver as a cancer-fighting agent. So does it work? Yes, in certain types of cancer and in certain types of patients.

This is what happens when the human body develops cancer: Healthy cells mutate into cancer cells continuously. This mutation takes place regardless of whether the person was ill prior to the cancer or very healthy.

Prostate Infection and Colloidal Silver ? Patient Considerations

However, the patient?s natural immune system automatically destroys the cancer cells at almost the same rate they occur. So if the patient were stable, there would be no symptoms or manifestation of the cancer.

But if the patient?s immune system were to breakdown or weaken, Colloidal Silver would probably be helpful. This theory is, so far, based on logic and cause and effect as more statistical data is needed.

Prostate Infection and Colloidal Silver ? Cancer Type Considerations

Colloidal Silver is indeed, however, effective in certain types of cancer that are triggered by a virus. A virus acts by invading tissues and hijacking the chemical reproductive function in its cells.

This forces the cell to reproduce the virus in place of the body?s natural (beneficial) chemicals. When Colloidal Silver comes into contact with the virus, the Silver reacts by increasing in concentration, killing the cancer cell.

Problems with prostate infection (also called prostatitis) often afflict men in their 30s to 50s. But even older men may get prostatitis. Aside from the usual symptoms getting worse, mistreatment can also worsen problems with prostate infection.

For instance, the wrong kind of massage therapy can lead to severe pain, infection of other parts of the body, and even hemorrhage.

Problems With Prostate Infection - Four Prostatitis Types

Problems with prostate infection occur due to bacteria in the first two types of prostatitis. The causes of the other two are still unknown.

1. Acute bacterial. Occurs suddenly. Symptoms are serious chills, fever, blood in urine. Needs to be directly treated by a doctor. It?s the easiest to detect and cure among all types. Unfortunately, it?s also the least common.

2. Chronic bacterial. Doesn?t occur suddenly. Symptom is recurring bladder infection. Cause could be some prostate defect that makes the urinary tract collect bacteria.

3. Chronic prostatitis or pelvic-pain disorder. Most prevalent yet least understood. Symptoms recur without warning and include discomfort or pain in the bladder or groin.

4. Asymptomatic prostatitis. Since it has no symptoms, it will only be detected if your doctor is examining you for prostate cancer or infertility. The condition doesn?t necessarily indicate cancer.

Problems With Prostate Infection: What Symptoms to Expect

The first two types of prostatitis are associated with most problems with prostate infection.

In acute bacterial cases, infection and complications in other urinary tract areas is often observed, such as:
- Unnatural frequent urination
- Urgency to urinate
- Pain during urination
- Problems in creating a normal urine stream
- Genital pain or tenderness
- Pain during ejaculation

Problems with prostate infection in acute bacterial cases may begin when the patient gets chills and/or high fever. The patient may also feel tired all the time and have general feelings of being unwell.

When a patient with acute bacterial prostatitis goes in for an exam, the doctor will usually notice that the prostate has become irregular, warm, firm, and enlarged. The doctor will not normally perform too vigorous an exam lest problems with prostate infection spread to the bloodstream.

Chronic bacterial cases, on the other hand, are a leading cause of UTI in men. This happens because the same bacterial strain in the urine and the fluid of the prostate will cause problems with prostate infection to recur or persist.

Symptoms in chronic bacterial cases may be like those of acute bacterial ones, only less intense, plus:
- Lower back pain
- Testicular pain
- Tenderness of the penis
- Sexual dysfunction (impotence)
- Low fever
- Joint and muscle pain

A doctor?s exam may show urethral discharge and pain in other areas around the genitals.

Problems with prostate infection in chronic bacterial cases typically lead to depression and feelings of stress. It still isn?t known whether psychological symptoms cause these feelings or vice versa.

The enlarged prostate and minimally invasive treatments for it have been the subject of many recent studies because alternative therapy carries greater risk. Although prostate surgery could provide the best chances of improving urinary functions and symptoms, enlarged prostate and minimally invasive therapy now appears more attractive.

The attraction lies in the fact that patients with prostate disorders who?ve been treated for it are simply weary of more invasive treatments. Those that haven?t been treated likewise prefer less invasive cures because they?re wary about having side effects associated with something as sensitive as the prostate.

Younger patients are especially wary about prostate surgery as they fear it may severely affect their quality of life (e.g., suffering from erectile dysfunction).

Since new methods for treating enlarged prostate and minimally invasive therapy focus on unblocking the flow of urine, they will neither destroy the entire prostate gland, nor reduce prostate size by very much.

Enlarged Prostate and Minimally Invasive Therapy ? Device Therapy

New types of enlarged prostate and minimally invasive treatments are mainly device therapies. These methods owe a lot to technology.

In these treatments, doctors use devices or gadgets for applying heat to tissues that block the bladder or urethra ducts. Heat destroys these tissues, effectively removing the obstructions without the need for surgery.

Some examples of new technology for treating enlarged prostate and minimally invasive procedures are:

- TUVP/TVP?Trans Urethral Vaporization of Prostate
- TUMT?Trans Urethral Microwave Thermo-therapy
- VLAP?Visual Laser Ablation of Prostate
- ILC?Interstitial Laser Coagulation
- TUNA?Trans Urethral Needle Ablation

The disadvantages of these new treatments for enlarged prostate and minimally invasive methods are they?re availability. If they?re available, there may be a lack of local doctors who know how to use them.

One of the biggest downsides to these new treatments is that your insurance company may not cover them as most of are regarded as unproven or being in the experimental stages.

Enlarged Prostate and Minimally Invasive Therapy ? Are You a Candidate?

If your answer to all these questions is NO, then you?re probably eligible for the new treatments for enlarged prostate and minimally invasive methods listed above.

1. Have you had prostate surgery?
2. Do you have a serious pelvic injury?
3. Have you ever had radiation done on your pelvis?
4. Do you have a severely enlarged prostate gland with acute symptoms?

Enlarged Prostate and Minimally Invasive Therapy ? Risk & Expense

In general, minimally invasive therapy shows better results than drugs at relieving lower urinary tract disorders. Although they?re not as effective as surgery, minimal invasion causes less injury to surrounding (healthy) tissues.

On the other hand, minimal invasion still poses a higher risk than drugs, but lower than surgery.

Finally, new treatments for enlarged prostate and minimally invasive methods are cheaper than both surgery and drugs, as drug treatment costs often pile up through the duration required for them to be effective.

The relationship between charcoal and enlarged prostate disorder has been indicated in studies that have pointed out a direct association between prostate dysfunction and the Western lifestyle. But even if direct cause and effect can be proven between charcoal and enlarged prostate conditions, the latter still hasn?t been proven as a cancer precursor.

An enlarged prostate, known by the clinical name benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, isn?t cancer.

No studies have as yet linked BPH and cancer. Nor does BPH increase your risk of developing prostate cancer. The only relationship between the two conditions is that they may share similar symptoms.

However, charcoal and enlarged prostate disorder are related in terms of:
1. The prostate being enlarged due to the presence of a tumor; and
2. Charcoal grilled food, particularly red meat, being associated with cancer risk.

That?s why, aside from its largely animal based diet, the Western lifestyle of having a fondness for barbecues has been related to cancer.

Make no mistake about it. Eating charcoal grilled red meat (and fried meat for that matter) has been shown to lead to the likelihood of developing cancer.

But the connection between charcoal and enlarged prostate conditions doesn?t have to do with anything like ingesting charcoal or carbon. At least, no studies have shown it so far.

Charcoal and Enlarged Prostate - But Isn?t Carbon Bad?

When activated, charcoal turns into carbon. But carbon from activated charcoal is actually an antidote to poison. If anyone you know gets poisoned, your local Poison Control Center will probably recommend eating activated charcoal.

In fact, first aid experts tell us that activated charcoal is a great thing to keep in our homes, especially if we have children. Activated charcoal is made up of organic matter such as wood pulp. It?s further treated to raise its absorptive power, making it a lifesaver that can absorb ingested poison.

What?s more, doctors prescribe activated carbon for diarrhea, flatulence, and as a pain reliever for stomach ulcer patients.

Charcoal and Enlarged Prostate - Remedy and Disease?

Those that relate charcoal and enlarged prostate disorder as remedy and disease because of charcoal?s power to absorb toxins are probably years of studies away from proving their claims.

Although it?s believed that activated charcoal attaches itself to certain chemicals in the human digestive tract (which stops it from being absorbed by the body to cause harm), there?s still no scientific proof that the same action works against cancer.

By the way, the fact that charcoal grilling increases cancer risk doesn?t have to do with the charcoal itself or its carbon content. It?s because eating meat cooked at very high temperatures ? often achieved by charcoal grills ? increases the risk of cancer.

Milking the prostate gland is a method of prostate gland stimulation using the hand or medical instrument. This activity causes a prostate to ejaculate seminal fluid. In the hand technique, someone inserts their fingers into your rectal region to milk the prostate. It’s tough to do the prostate milking by yourself, so it’s generally done by a medical professional or a partner. Milking the prostate gland is also known as prostate massage.

Although often used interchangeably, prostate massage is more often used when the aim is relief of chronic prostatitis. Milking the prostate gland is more closely associated with the reduction of sexual drive or activity via prostatic fluid removal.

Milking The Prostate Gland Solo

The procedure for massaging or milking the prostate gland is fairly simple. While not exactly the best way to do it, milking the prostate gland solo is acceptable. Here are steps you can take if you want to go the whole milking the prostate gland activity alone.

Perform bowel movement or urination to heighten the relaxation of the prostate area.
Trim your fingernails and make sure they’ve got no jagged edges protruding prior to milking the prostate gland.
Thoroughly clean your hands and body then slip your hands into sterile latex gloves. Dab water-based lube on your hand digits before milking the prostate gland.
Gently insert your finger/s into your anal region. Move fingers upwards and inwards gradually. Fingers should be moving in the navel’s general direction.
You’ll start to feel something resembling a large walnut. This is the prostate gland. Massage it using a delicate, waving motion along the sides. Don’t press too hard on the center or you’ll hit the sensitive nerves. Take care not to touch the prostate gland with your bare fingernails when milking the prostate gland.
You might experience some troubling sensation that gives you the urge to go to the bathroom when you don’t really have to. Try to ignore this and get on with the procedure.
After several minutes, the prostate gland will be sufficiently stimulated to ejaculate. It’s possible to experience orgasm in the process of milking the prostate gland, but it doesn’t always bring about successful ejaculation.

Prostate gland milking is sometimes used as a medical procedure for relief of symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BHP) and chronic prostatitis. Milking the prostate gland is not recommended for patients suffering from acute prostatitis as the infection can quickly spread elsewhere within the body if prostate gland massage is performed.

Prostate treatment cost varies widely depending on the severity of the disorder and the type of therapy. But since cancer treatment is notoriously expensive, several groups have compiled statistics on it, particularly cancer of the prostate treatment cost.

Prostate Treatment Cost ? Recent Cancer Treatment Study

One of the most recent studies was published in a February 2006 issue of Cancer, the medical journal of the University of California in San Francisco. The study revealed that the typical five-year cancer of the prostate treatment cost is $42,570-cumulative.

The study tracked cancer of the prostate treatment cost in over 4,500 patients who had just been diagnosed with the disease.

Prostate Treatment Cost Study ? Which Treatments Did Patients Prefer?

What kind of prostate treatment was selected depended on a patient?s risk at his cancer stage as well as his age, researchers said, to wit:
- High risk, older subjects wanted costlier methods (e.g., androgen deprivation and external radiation therapy).
- Lower risk, younger subjects generally wanted the cheaper prostatectomy.

Prostate Treatment Cost Study ? Findings

The 2006 California study revealed the following regarding cancer of the prostate treatment cost.
1. In the initial 6 months following diagnosis, the average treatment cost was $11,495.
2. Individual expenses varied widely: for watchful waiting it was $2,568, for external radiation it was $24,204.
3. After 6 months, mean annual expense was $7,740/patient. For watchful waiting=$5,843 and for androgen deprivation treatment=$12,590.
4. Overall mean per-patient expense over 5? years=$42,570. For watchful waiting=$32,135 and for androgen deprivation=$69,244.

Prostate Treatment Cost ? Conclusions

Therefore, cancer of the prostate treatment cost per patient is both substantial as well as sustained over the long term.

A patient shouldn?t really decide on his treatment based purely on hospital/clinic literature, which only lists short term treatment expenses.

Comparing the cost of services between institutions by these fixed amounts can?t really take into consideration the total prostate treatment cost over the duration of the treatment.

If you?re trying to decide which prostate treatment to undergo, you will also have to consider what your insurance is willing to pay for. If you find the costs outlined in the study staggering, you could look into less expensive, less invasive treatments.

But the latest prostate cancer treatments use new technology, which are often classified as ?experimental? by insurance companies. This means that you may have to pay for your prostrate treatment cost out of your own pocket if you opt for them.

One prostate massage technique is generally used for treating prostatitis, which is the infection and/or inflammation of the prostate. The goal of this prostate massage technique: fluid release.

Prostate Massage Technique: How It Became Unpopular

Many doctors believe that the prostate massage technique is obsolete. These doctors prefer to work with antibiotics. The problem is that less than 10% of prostatitis cases are caused by bacteria, which is what antibiotics fight.

So in 90% of cases, it is likely that the suffering patient will be told to give the area a warm bath and just wait out the pain and discomfort until it disappears by itself.

If the patient happens to find a doctor who practices the prostate massage technique, he may be faced with another problem: most health plans don?t cover regular prostate massage therapy!

What?s even sadder is that the advantages of the prostate massage technique have been well documented in Western medical practice for a hundred years. But the practice seemed to wane simply because nobody bothered to publish enough statistical data on it.

Other factors that made the technique scarce were the difficulty doctors had in extracting fluid as well as the mode of massage, which was (understandably) not too popular with both doctors and patients alike.

In most cases, the only option left for the chronic prostatitis patient is to perform the prostate massage technique on himself.

How to Do the Prostate Massage Technique

What you need: sterile surgical gloves, pillow, KY or anesthetic jelly.

Warning: This procedure should only be performed if prostatitis is NOT caused by bacterial infection (consult your doctor). Performing this on an infected prostate may cause infection to spread.

1. Urinate and/or move your bowels before proceeding.
2. Trim your fingernails, removing jagged edges.
3. Lay on your side in fetal position with legs bent.
4. To help relax your muscles, put a pillow between your legs.
5. Lubricate your gloved hand with jelly.
6. Insert a finger into your anal canal.
7. Move upwards and towards your navel.
8. The tiny, round, walnut-like bulb is your prostate.
9. Massage your prostate along the edges.
(Warning: Do not let your nails hit. Do not press the center too hard as it has sensitive nerves.)
10. Feeling like you want to urinate is a natural reaction. Ignore it and proceed.
11. Your prostate gland should be stimulated to ejaculate after some minutes.
12. The average is 4 to 5 drops, but a dozen drops is normal.

Note that this particular prostate massage technique isn?t always successful.

Prostate cleansing herbs can help in the body?s natural healing and cleansing process. Men living in the Far East generally have healthier prostates than those living in the United States. Dietary intake may play a crucial part in it. A healthful diet that consists of fruits, veggies, soy products and whole grains along with herbal and vitamin support can have plenty of beneficial effects on the prostate gland. These prostate cleansing herbs are designed to support healthy prostate gland functioning.

Prostate Cleansing Herbs 101

If you?re suffering from erectile dysfunction, painful and/or difficult urination, prostatitis, frequent nighttime urination, enlarged prostate or high PSA levels, prostate cleansing herbs might be of help. Prostate cleansing herbs enhance the natural immune system and promote prostate tissue health.

Here are some of the more common prostate cleansing herbs and extracts:

* Graviola ? The Graviola prostate cleansing herbs have been proven effective in the treatment of cancer cells that are highly resistant to anti-cancer meds.
* Saw Palmetto extract ? This comes from small palm trees, with leaves and berries, that are native to North America. Some fat-soluble active compounds in Saw Palmetto that have beneficial effects on the prostate are monoglycerides, fatty acids and phytosterols.
* Momordica Charantia ? In clinical studies undertaken, these prostate cleansing herbs have been shown to inhibit growth of prostate tumors.
* Hawthorne extract ? These prostate cleansing herbs are noted for their high flavonoid compounds concentration of proanthocyanidins. These are mainly responsible for the extract?s free radical-scavenging activities. Such prostate cleansing herbs extracts are useful for promoting healthy cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Flavonoid compounds are good for strengthening coronary vessels, which in turn, enhances smooth arterial blood flow.
* Crinum Latifolium ? These prostate cleansing herbs have been known to alleviate BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) symptoms.
* Pumpkin Seed Oil extract ? Containing large amounts of sterols, zinc and fatty acids, this is extremely beneficial to healthy prostate and bladder functions.
* Pygeum extract ? This comes from evergreen trees in Africa. The extracts from the trees? bark contain a number of chemical compounds like phytosterols that have anti-inflammatory actions, promoting healthy prostate and bladder function.
* Nettle Root extract ? This is especially helpful in maintaining healthy functioning of the bladder. It?s a nourishing and prostate cleansing herb that?s loaded with minerals. Nettles possess a mild, water-releasing trait that helps kidneys in uric acid elimination.

Prostate cleansing herbs and special formulas let the body?s internal mechanisms correct any deficiencies associated with prostate disorders or dysfunctions. Most prostate cleansing herbs offer safe and effective treatment solutions to prostate problems. When choosing among various prostate cleansing herbs products, it?s important to be informed about what would best suit your particular prostate condition.

Prostate surgery aftercare is just as important as pre-surgery care. If you’ve had your prostate and its neighboring lymph nodes taken out because of prostate cancer, you’d have an idea what prostate surgery aftercare is about. Part of what’s involved in prostate surgery aftercare is usually discussed by the surgeon to his patient. The surgeon is also the best person to assist people in arranging for additional prostate surgery aftercare and further treatments.

Prostate Surgery Aftercare To-dos

Here’s what happens after surgery. A patient winds up with an incision in his lower abdomen along with staples to ensure the skin stays closed. There are also a couple of drainage tubes toward the sides of the incision.

The information below on prostate surgery aftercare will help men at home as they hurdle their surgery recovery period.

Prostate surgery aftercare activities. People can shower once staples are removed. Lifting weights above five pounds is a no-no. Driving cars without the doctor’s consent isn’t also recommended. Other things to avoid are sitting for extended periods and going up/down stairs more than three times a day within the first week of being home. Lay off strenuous activities like running and straining for a good six weeks.

Prostate surgery aftercare diet. People can resume their normal food diet once home. Do avoid constipation as this causes strain when engaged in bowel movement. If needed, use laxatives or stool softeners. Drink three to four quarts of fluids daily, unless liquid intake is restricted for medical reasons. Steer clear of alcohol and caffeine.
Prostate surgery aftercare for Foley catheter. A Care sheet will be provided for patients that include instructions regarding catheter homecare. Make sure the catheter is securely fastened to the leg. Clean the catheter at least two times daily. Should the penis tip become irritated or sore, apply a small amount of antibiotic ointment on it and in the surrounding area of the catheter, right where it inserts into the urethra.
Prostate surgery aftercare after removal of catheter. Drink plenty of liquids throughout the recovery phase. Patients drop by the office a week after prostate surgery for staples removal, three weeks later for catheter removal and six weeks after for follow-up and post-op Prostate Specific Antigen testing. When coming for catheter removal, bring adult diapers or pads to absorb leaks or drips that may follow catheter removal.

Good prostate surgery aftercare is essential to fast and worry-free recovery. Proper prostate surgery aftercare will make the weeks following surgery go by faster and with less problems. The key to effective prostate surgery aftercare is to keep the affected area clean at all times and to keep backbreaking activities at a minimum.

Pharmaceutical treatment for prostate cancer was approved as Proscar (Finasteride) in 1992 for treating prostrate gland enlargement. Recently, two other drugs, Nexrutine and Satraplatin, have undergone research aiming to find more sources of pharmaceutical treatment for prostate cancer.

Pharmaceutical Treatment for Prostate Cancer ? Proscar

Five years after Merck & Co.?s Proscar was approved for prostrate disorder, the drug Finasteride was approved by the FDA for male pattern baldness. So Merck marketed it, under the brand name Propecia, as a hair loss treatment for men.

Proscar was tested in doses of 5 mg a day at the PCPT (Prostate Cancer Prevention Trials). The 5-mg dose was chosen since it was the usual treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia, which is prostate enlargement that isn?t cancer. (Only 1 mg a day is prescribed for baldness.)

The 5-mg dose was shown to lower prostate cancer risk in PCPT subjects by 25%.

But the problem with this particular pharmaceutical treatment for prostate cancer was this: the cancer that did develop despite the drug appeared to be more prone to growth and spreading. The reason for this is as yet unknown.

According to the PCPT, 6% to 19% of subjects reported side effects from taking the drug. The most common was erectile dysfunction. Less common was enlargement of the male breast glands.

Although later trials showed that these side effects could stop if you stopped taking the drug, some men who?ve purchased Proscar commercially say the side effects last for months, even years, after they stopped using it. Some consumers of the lower dosage Propecia say they notice long lasting side effects as well.

Pharmaceutical Treatment for Prostate Cancer ? Nexrutine

Researchers at the University of Texas have tested Next Pharmaceuticals? Nexrutine, a patented extract taken from the Philodendron bark. Prior to 2006, Nexrutine was mainly marketed as a prostate inflammation and pain reliever.

The University of Texas study revealed that Nexrutine was an effective pharmaceutical treatment for prostate cancer as it worked at inhibiting prostate cancer cell growth.

What?s more, Nexrutine was proven to fight existing cancer cells through apoptosis, or cell death.

Pharmaceutical Treatment for Prostate Cancer ? Satraplatin

In 2006, Satraplatin manufaturer Spectrum Pharmaceuticals presented new data at a symposium hosted by the American Society of Clinical Oncology in San Francisco.

Satraplatin is the drug maker?s lead candidate as a cure for prostate cancer. The Spectrum-sponsored study tested 17 prostate cancer patients who had advance solid tumors.

Most of the patients had undergone an average of three prior chemotherapy sessions. This pharmaceutical treatment for prostate cancer stabilized the disease in two patients, while one patient showed a partial response.

Side effects, such as diarrhea and nausea, were reported to be mild and easily controlled by oral prophylactics.

New treatments for prostate cancer are being developed and widely implemented in both the scientific and natural fronts. What?s more, the line between the two approaches isn?t so easily drawn nowadays. Medical doctors and an alarmed male population are only willing to try all sorts of new treatments for prostate cancer given that:

- Half the US male population is expected to develop prostatitis symptoms at some point in their life.

- In the next year, 30,000 men with prostate cancer are expected to have a recurrence ? and half will probably die.

New Treatments for Prostate Cancer - Androgen Blockage

The most popular treatment for prostate cancer is still surgery combined with radiation. The surgeon removes the prostate gland, after which radiation is used to kill the cancer. The problem with this method is cancer will likely recur.

Even if cancer doesn?t recur, men who undergo treatment (especially younger ones) are dissatisfied due to permanent side effects, such as erectile dysfunction, incontinence, etc.

The good news is that one of the new treatments for prostate cancer, Androgen Blockage, doesn?t come with these complications. Rather, its side effects (e.g., low energy, muscle weakness, weight gain) are more tolerable and will usually disappear after treatment.

Among the new treatments for prostate cancer, this is one of the least invasive. It makes use of three drugs to stop androgen (male hormone) production.

Prostate cancer feeds on the primary androgen, testosterone. So if you block androgens, you can reduce or stop cancer.

How long does it take? Around one year. The duration of treatment is crucial. It should last long enough to manage the cancer, but not too prolonged that cancer mutates into a resistant strain.

Doctors also prescribe Proscar, a drug that protects the patient from any hormonal byproducts that promote cancer growth. The only downside is that while Androgen Blockage won?t cause erectile dysfunction, using Proscar does.

New Treatments for Prostate Cancer ? Palmetto

While Palmetto isn?t technically one of the new treatments for prostate cancer as it has been used in Europe for many years, its use is comparatively new in America. It comes from Palmetto palm berries, often found along the coast of the US Southeast.

Clinical research shows that the Palmetto herb works better than Proscar (see above) in treating cases of prostate enlargement. Studies show that:

- Palmetto worked in 90% of subjects after 4 to 6 weeks
- Proscar worked in less than 50% of subjects after 12 months

Even better, Palmetto is cheaper and doesn?t cause the side effects that Proscar does (e.g., erectile dysfunction).

This is why among the new treatments for prostate cancer that doctors are exploring is replacing Proscar with Palmetto in Androgen Blockage therapy.

Johns Hopkins research on prostate cancer includes the latest news and info on prostate cancer, prostatitis and BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia). Such articles come straight from the specialists at Johns Hopkins. When it comes to the most up-to-date prostate cancer-related information, almost nothing beats Johns Hopkins research on prostate cancer.

The Brady Urological Institute of Johns Hopkins has been at the helm of advancing understanding of malignant and benign prostate tumors. With its PhD faculty undertaking fulltime research activities and highly talented pool of pre- and post-doctoral fellows engaged in various Johns Hopkins research on prostate cancer, the institute has been able to develop many different concepts and approaches that hold a lot of promise for better methods of managing advanced and localized prostate cancer.

More On Johns Hopkins Research On Prostate Cancer?

Prostates are walnut-sized glands found just below men’s bladders. The prostate surrounds the urethra, a tube transporting urine from the bladder. It’s responsible for keeping semen and urine flowing in the right direction. In addition, it also produces prostatic fluid, a component of semen.

According to Johns Hopkins research on prostate cancer, when men reach middle age and/or beyond, the prostate’s inner portion starts enlarging, putting pressure on the urethra. This is called BPH. Pressure of enlarged prostates in men can produce symptoms like frequent urination, weak or delayed urinary streams and need to urinate often at night.

Over the years, the Brady Urological Laboratory has developed and typified exceptional animal models for prostate cancer study that resemble the natural disease in men. Such models were perfect for investigating immunotherapeutic, surgical, chemotherapeutic and hormonal approaches to prostate cancer. Johns Hopkins research on prostate cancer has successfully plotted the anatomical course of nerves controlling erection and was able to improve upon the surgical techniques regarding their preservation.

Johns Hopkins research on prostate cancer includes studies determining how the nerves could possibly be restored in patients. Other Johns Hopkins research on prostate cancer has endeavored to discover potential techniques that might promote nerve regeneration. Experts involved in Johns Hopkins research on prostate cancer discuss the varied aspects of prostate cancer ? from its prevention to its diagnosis to its treatment.

Specialists for Johns Hopkins research on prostate cancer also cover a wide range of other genitourinary conditions that might result from prostate disorders and disease treatments. These include various types of urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction and overactive bladders. Experts involved in Johns Hopkins research on prostate cancer continue to explore in detail current prostate cancer and related disorders’ medications and the different treatment options available so patients can make more informed decisions.
